
5 Week Beginning Bonsai Class - Bonsai Basics
Learn beginning bonsai techniques for creating deciduous and evergreen outdoor bonsai. This class will include the aesthetics of bonsai, bonsai history, 5 basic bonsai styles, pot selection, bonsai soils, plant selection, shaping, watering, wiring, tool selection and care.
We will be working with a Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper (Juniperus chinensis procumbens 'nana'). All supplies necessary to create a bonsai to take home are provided. This class is for those who have always wanted to learn how to create a bonsai and have an understanding of their care and maintenance. This class is also designed for those wanting a firm foundation in bonsai basics, expand their knowledge, and feel confident in keeping their bonsai beautiful and healthy.
5 Week Beginning Bonsai II Class-The Next Step
The Next Step Bonsai II Class will be a continuation of bonsai techniques and bonsai styles covered in the Beginning Bonsai Class and will include more advanced wiring, plant shaping, creation of jin, sabamike, and shari, soils, use of raffia, specialty and power tools. We will continue with deciduous and evergreen outdoor plants and include a general introduction to indoor bonsai. Propagation of bonsai plants from seed, cuttings, and layering will also be covered.
We will be working with your choice of "Little Gem" Spruce (Picia abies ‘Little Gem’), True Dwarf Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa’), Dwarf Mugho pine (Pinus mugo var.pumilio) or other available plant material for your hands-on class project. This class is designed for those who have had the five week beginning class, or another beginning bonsai class or workshop.
5 Week Beyond Basics Class -Grove or Forest Planting
Join us for a 5 week Beyond Basics Class with an emphasis on creating a grove or forest style bonsai. We will be working with 5-9 trees that will be planted using either a rock or oval dish.
We will cover creation, placement , styling, care and repotting. We will be working with 2-3 year old Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) , Hedge Maple/Field Maple (Acer campestre) or other plant material that is available. Supplies provided: oval bonsai dish or rock slab, muck, soil, wire, screen, 5-7 trees and use of all tools needed to complete your project.
One Day Beginning Bonsai Workshop
This class is for those who have little or no experience with bonsai and have always wanted to make a bonsai. We will cover some history, basic styles, maintenance, potting and repotting, soils and care. You will be able to create a bonsai in the workshop that you can take home.
Supplies provided: Bonsai dish, plant, soil, wire, screen and the use of tools. One hour break for lunch or bring your own. Coffee, tea and water provided.

Just in time for Mother's Day! Join us to create an Azalea Dish Garden bonsai for a gift or for yourself. Workshop includes: plant, bonsai dish, figurine, soil, wire and the use of tools during class. Plus you get Richard to guide you in creating your Bonsai Dish Garden. We can board your plant until Mother's Day Week or you can take it home.
5 Week Beyond Basics Class - Root-Over-Rock Style - Satsuki Azalea
Join us for a weekly class and create a bonsai in the Root-Over-Rock style. Different techniques used to create root-over-rock style will be discussed and demonstrated.
The plant material we will be using for hands-on work in this class are: Rhododendron indicum ‘Kazan’ azaleas grown from cuttings in 2004. This azalea tends to grow very large roots and lends itself to the root-over-rock style. Supplies provided include: Bonsai dish, plant, rock, soil, wire, screen and the use of tools. We will work on styling, wiring, pruning, potting, pinching, maintenance and care specific to Satsuki azaleas.

Join us for a weekly class with an emphasis on creating a Phoenix Graft bonsai. A Phoenix Graft is a living plant attached to a piece of driftwood to create an older looking bonsai. Supplies provided: Dish, plant, driftwood, soil, wire, screen and the use of tools. We will cover different methods of creating Phoenix Grafts. We will be using ‘shimpaku’ juniper.
