Tool Care

Always dry your tools thoroughly and lubricate lightly.

Use a good lubricant. A good rust preventative lubricant is Tri-Flow which does not attract dust and dirt like many popular products. It is available in the 2 ounce squeeze bottle. A great size for your tool box.

Remove rust immediately

Remove rust and minor pitting using a rust eraser such as Sandflex by Klingspor.

Simply use the block like an eraser, rubbing firmly on the surface. Sandflex can be used wet or dry. The results are even more spectacular when combined with water, oil, or any cleaning solution. You can "carve" the block to any shape to clean up a concave or convex surface. Made of a semi-flexible rubber compound with grit embedded throughout the rubber block. Continued use constantly exposes new grit. The block is self-cleaning and easy to use. Sandflex can also remove water spots and stains from ceramic containers (fine and medium grit only.)

Always keep your tools clean.

Keep cutting edges free of nicks. Carefully remove small pieces of gravel or soil that cling to branches or roots before cutting.

Sharpen cutting edges only if necessary.

Attempt to sharpen your tools only if you know what you are doing. Bypass blades are sharpened differently than blades that meet. Cutters and shears have different beveled edges and you must retain the original bevel and angle if it is to work properly.

The Joshua Roth Blade Sharpener is the perfect sharpener for restoring the blades of all types of cutlery and tools that do not have a serrated cutting edge.
