Bonsai Soil

This bonsai soil was primarily developed for both indoor and outdoor bonsai and is also excellent for succulents, cactus, or any plant needing better drainage than peat-based soils. This soil is a mixture of bark, pumice, and mushroom compost. The pH of the soil runs between 5.5 and 6.5. I have used this soil for deciduous trees and I have also used it with azaleas, which tend to like more acid soils and have had excellent results. I generally like to add a little more pumice or grits when potting up conifers. The mix also contains a small amount of complete fertilizer with micronutrients.

Bonsai Rapeseed Cake Fertilizer

This Maruta brand Rapeseed is manufactured in Japan by the suppliers to the Isei Shrine. Nearly impossible to overfeed, as it is long lasting--Replace every 50 days in Summer, 100 days in Winter. Each cake is approximately 1" diameter by 5/6" thick, and consists of 10% Bonemeal and 90% Rapeseed meal. Apply cakes at the rate of 3-4:5" container, 4-5:6" container, 5-7:7" container, 6-8:8" container, 7-9:10" container, 8-12:15" container. Does not deteriorate even when it appears moldy.

Bonsai Soil Amendments Collection

This collection includes 1 gallon of bonsai soil, 1 quart of red lava, 1 quart of black lava, 1 quart of calcined clay and 1 quart of crushed granite. The bonsai soil was developed for indoor and outdoor bonsai. This soil is a mixture of bark, pumice and mushroom compost. I generally like to add a little more pumice or grits when potting up trees. This is a package of assorted gritty material to mix up your own soils. The calcined clay is a clay product that is fired at 1200 degrees F. It is ground up and screened to remove the small particles (fines.) It helps bonsai soils to hold water within the particles and release it as needed while creating air and pore space around the roots. This is sometimes sold under the trade name of Turface or Profile. The red lava is an ideal additive to your bonsai soil. It is a porous material and will hold water and allow drainage around the roots. Lava is a relatively heavy ingredient compared to pumice and will not float to the top of the mix. At repotting time, lava can easily be removed from the roots of your bonsai. The black lava is a great additive in your bonsai soils and is also wonderful as a top dressing. Crushed granite can be used as one of the basic components of a good bonsai soil mix. It can also be used for top dressing and when creating paths and stream beds on a saikei or penjing. Used as a decorative layer on a humidity tray, it sets off your bonsai pot. In a good bonsai soil, crushed granite will help retain water in interstatial areas while allowing excellent drainage. Because of the irregular surface area of the Crushed Granite, it creates more surface area for roots to grow on. The particle sizes are approximately pinhead to matchhead size. 1 Quart of Calcined Clay

Calcined Clay is a clay product that is fired at 1200 degrees F. It is then ground up and screened to remove the dust and larger particles. This is added to bonsai soils to hold water within the particle and release it as needed while creating air and pore space so that your mix will have excellent drainage. This is sometimes sold under the trade names of Turface or Profile.
